When you're packing up your self-storage unit, you want to make sure that you are using all of the space that you have available in order to make sure that you won't need to rent a second unit. Here are some tips for maximizing your space and ensuring that you will be able to easily access items in the future.

1. Remove Legs From Furniture

If at all possible, remove any legs from tables, chairs, or desks. You can easily store legs and then either stack the tops of the tables and chairs on top of each other or lean them against the wall. By doing this, you won't have to deal with the awkward, often unusable area underneath the chairs or tables.

2. Make an Inventory of Every Box and a Total Inventory of Every Column

It's going to be difficult for you to locate a specific item within a box several months down the line. To ensure that you don't have to dig through dozens of boxes, make sure that you write down exactly what you put in each box. Consider typing it up and attaching an inventory list to the top of the box that it belongs to, so it's always on hand. Then, make a total inventory of each column.

Label each stack of boxes 1 through however many boxes are in a stack. Make sure that the label is on every side of the box so that you will always be able to see it. Then, print out a second inventory sheet for each box and put them in a paper-clipped pile in the order that they are in the stack. This will allow you to just have to flip through a pad of paper, rather than unpack each box when you are looking for something.

3. Store Items Inside of Other Items

Never leave drawers, washing machines, or dryers empty. Fill them with items that won't be ruined by being cramped. Consider storing linens in larger appliances and important papers in desk drawers. Make sure that you label everything.

4. Leave an Aisle

Finally, make sure that you leave an aisle in the middle of your storage space when you're packing it so that you can more easily reach boxes that are further back.
