Planning a Successful Move

If you have a big move coming up, you need to make a plan to help your pets adjust to their new home. In order to help your pets adjust to their new environment, make sure you follow the three steps outlined below.

Step #1: Make A "Den" For Your Pet

Before your pets arrive at their new home, you should transport all of their belongings and set it up in one particular room. This will be your pets' new "den" inside of your house. You should make sure that their den is equipped with their:

• favorite toys
• blankets
• bed
• water bowl
• food bowl

If you have a cat, you should also place their litter box in their new den as well. The point of creating a den is to give your pets somewhere familiar to hang-out when they get to your new home, that is filled with items and scents that they recognize.

When you get to your new home, start by introducing your pets to their new den. Let them hang out in their den and get acclimated to their new environment.

Step #2: Introduce Them To One Room At A Time

After your pets have become comfortable in their new den, introduce them to one room of the house at a time. Keep the doors closed to rooms that you do not want to introduce them to yet. By slowly introducing your pets to your new home, the experience will be less overwhelming for them.

If at all possible, try to wait to introduce your pets to the different rooms in your new house until after you have unpacked and set up each room.

Step #3: Keep Up Your Regular Routine

Try your best to keep your pets on the same schedule that you had them on before at their old home. Make sure you feed them at the same time of day, and that you go on walks at the same time of day as you did before as well.

Most animals like to know when they are going to be feed and when someone is going to pay attention to them.
